News update

An exciting day for Irish athletics at the new Athlone IT Indoor Stadium on Sunday also proved to be a memorable one for Sligo AC with several excellent performances. Some of the club's up and coming stars made their mark in fields of the highest quality that included top performers not only nationally but internationally.

Sprinter Zak Irwin continues to blaze a trail. In a day of plenty of records and PB's, Zak established a new youth record for the 60m in a time of 6.98. There were also good performances in Sligo AC colours from juvenile Stacey Kerr who was second in the 200m in a time of 26.84. David Harper recorded an excellent 3.51 in the 1500m. Colm Burke achieved 6'12 in he long jump which also marks him down as one for the future in this event. Spaniard Alberto Sanchez wore the club vest with distinction in the 3,000m, crossing the line in a very impressive 7'59".

Attention now turns to cross country once more with the national intermediate, masters and juvenile development cross country events taking place in Derry on Sunday next, February 3rd. The club will be fielding men's and women's teams in the masters' event while there will also be competitors in the intermediate grade with some newcomers making their debuts for the club. There will also be juvenile teams competing. Cross country is an excellent base for the many road and track events that lie ahead and several athletes will have this in mind when they take to the start line in Derry.

Meanwhile, the first race in the County Sligo Road Race League is the Tubbercurry 10k on its traditional March 17th date, the 40th running of the event. The Sligo Champion has come on board to promote this race and this will be a significant boost for South Sligo Athletic Club which hosts the race. In another shot in the arm for athletics in the county, The Sligo Champion has also announced it will once again be the major sponsor of the Streets of Sligo 5k to be held on Sunday, June 16th in conjunction with Sligo AC. More details on this race in due course.

The club is also delighted that Amcor is continuing its sponsorship of the club. The Finisklin based company has generously sponsored gear for the club and it is now on board as main sponsor of the club's 8k road race which will be held later in the year.

Training continues for juveniles each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Sligo IT. Adult training for all levels also at Sligo IT on Tuesdays and on Thursdays with the group meeting at the car park beside Doorly Park playground. For training times contact sligoac@gmail.com.
