2016 Cara Bundoran 10 Week Programme

Starting from Tuesday 5th January 2016, Sligo AC are launching a 10 week training programme for Senior & Master Members, providing a tailored training scheduled in preparation for the Cara Bundoran 10K & 10 Mile race which is due to take place 14 March 2016.

The training schedule will include two group training sessions per week. This will consist of two specific pace work training sessions, taking place on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. This will commence at 6pm, with the workout piece starting at 6.15 on the pitch at the track of the IT on Tuesdays and the same time on Thursdays with the meeting point being the car park at Regional Park across from the sports complex.

Those that sign up will be added to an exclusive mailing list and will receive their training plans on a weekly basis. In addition to this, it will provide a forum to ask questions about training address concerns and help keep overall motivation going.

There will be a dry run of the 10K and 10 mile course in advance for the race for those that wish to avail of it. In addition to this, we are hoping to have a reduced race entry fee for those participating in the training programme.

The training programme will run from Tuesday 5th January 2016 and will run until race day on Saturday 12th March, the provides 10 weeks training.

Following the success and uptake of this programme our aim is to continue to grow and build more tailored training programmes based on members goals for 2016.

If you know of anyone who is currently not a member but would like to avail of this training, please forward on the information. The training is open to club members, therefore they would need to join the club for the new calendar year.

Sligo Coast to Coast



This is the original Coast to Coast 10mile run supported by Sligo AC. You'll still see the Wild Atlantic Way at a non inflated price with all proceeds going to the Carers Association.

There will be prizes for 1st,2nd and 3rd for men and women.

Category prizes for 1st three Over 40, 50 and 60 Male and Female. Prizes for first three walkers plus many spot prizes. A great event that's going from strength to strength and ideal prep for anyone running in the Dublin Marathon.

STREETS OF SLIGO 5k



Now in it's 6th year,the Streets Of Sligo welcomes runners,joggers and walkers and comes at the end of a week celebrating WB Yeats' 150th birthday. The race is chip timed and registration can be completed at the link above. The entry fee is €15 and the first 350 entries will receive a free t-shirt. Our chosen charity is the Sligo Cancer Care Support Centre and a portion of the overall entry fee will be donated to this worthy local charity.

GloHealth Intermediate,Masters & Juvenile B Crosscountry Championships


The Master, Intermediate and Juvenile B Cross Country Championships took place in Tuam on Sunday the 8th of February. Almost 1,000 athletes were treated to a real cross country test over the misty, rolling hills of the Palace Grounds. Course conditions were favourable with moderate temperatures and a minimum of mud to contend with.

Sligo AC Masters team finished 6th and were lead home by Richard Gorman who finished 11th overall. There were good runs also from Seamus Somers, Damien Kennedy, Michael O Connell, David Kearins, Conal Sexton, Rory Connor, Bill Carty and Enda Whelan.

The evergreen Lucy Brennan won overall silver in the Masters Women O55 with Marie Johnston, CindyMcCarthy, Aishling Cawley and Deirdre Deering competing well. Rianne McHugh was the sole representative in the Inter Women while Raymond Byrne and Fintan Whelan competed in the Inter Men’s race.

Sligo AC Juveniles produced a marvellous display of cross country running with gold for the U15 team consisting of Ailbhe Morgan, Aoife Morris, Eimear Joyce, Tara Carty, Nadine Deering and Leah Jermyn. The Girls U17 team of Laura Joyce, Caoimhe Brennan, Riona Connor, Orlaith Delahunt, Kate Carty and Ashling Jones also achieved gold.

Well done to Ailbhe Morgan who won individual gold with Aoife Morris achieving silver in the U15 event.

There were silver team medals for the Boys U15 team of Leo Doherty, Conor Melvin, Jack Cawley and Jack Connor and the Boys U13 team of Michael Morgan, Eoin Carty, Sam Mac Dermott and Liam Mc Carthy.

The Boys U11 of Paul O Brien, Alfie Mc Dermott, Ross Doherty, Joe Campbell, Finn Mitchell and Hughie Doherty were just outside the medals in 4th.

The Girls U11 team of Ava Griffin, Una Griffin, Caoimhe Connor and Allanah Conlon were equally unlucky in 4th place also.

The Girls U13 Maedbh Mooney, Sarah Melvin, Keri Mitchell, Sarah Gillen, Tara Cawley, Jane Cawley and Amy Deering ran very well to finish 5th overall.

A special mention and well done to the Juvenile coaches namely Karl Boyce, Rory Connor, Alan Kearins and Terry Hayes.

North Connacht Schools Cross Country

Well done to the 798 athletes who competed on Wednesday 28 January in the Schools North Connacht Cross Country Finals in Sligo Racecourse. Conditions were difficult to say the least but the bitterly cold North wind, hail and snow failed to deter the spirited young athletes. 

 

An exciting Minor Girls Race was won by Saoirse O Brien from Westport  with Karrie Chambers  and Lucy Mc Nair from Sligo Grammar ,Eva Delahunt from Ursuline Sligo and Mercy College’s Caoimhe O Sullivan all running well in qualifying for the Finals.

A superb performance from Ballysadare’s Aoife Morris  saw her eat up the ground to win the Junior Girls Race with Ursuline College leading the team event.  In the Junior Boys race, Fiachra Staunton from Sligo Grammar qualified with Summerhill College second in the team standings.  

In the Inter Girls team event, Sligo Grammar qualified in 6 th position with Mercy College’s Hana Gross qualifying also in her first ever cross country race. In the Inter Boys race Summerhill were  4th with Daniel Doherty from Sligo Grammar also running well. 

In the Senior Girls, Ursuline Sligo led the way just ahead of Sligo Grammar A with Sligo Grammar B team also qualifying along with Ellen O Grady from Ballysadare.  In the Senior Boys Race  Sligo Grammar were the team winners with Owen Anderson from Summerhill also qualifying.

A big well done to Tommy Craddock and his helpers who did a superb job organising the day’s events.

All those listed above qualify for Connacht Finals to be held on TUESDAY 24TH FEBRUARY at Sligo Racecourse.

A Running Seminar Not To Be Missed

We are delighted to announce that we will be hosting a running seminar with our very own club member Emmett Dunleavy. This will take place on Tuesday 10th February at 7.30pm in the Knocknarea Arena. This event is for all existing club members and those wishing to join the club. 

For those who may not know Emmett, he has represented our club for 20 years picking up many national medals for both individual and team events. He has represented Ireland at both Junior and Senior level and holds some very impressive PB’s, including 1500m - 3:47 / 3k - 8:16 / 5k - 14:35
